The Emotions Of Poker
Someone once said, “I spent half of my fortune on women, alcohol and poker; The other half, I just wasted it. ”
Hi friends, I’m Pepín Marchena , and like most of you a hardcore poker player and a born loser. In fact, I’ve been playing for ten years and I’m still at the stage of staying at peace with the losses, hard task mine; I think I will need at least ten more years to fulfill my task, if I do not lose my underwear soon.
I have gone through, I think, for almost all the player phases that exist (and I say almost because I still lack the last), and in each of them I have experienced different emotions, some better and some worse, some positive and some negative, And other destructive ones; That is, the one cannot go without the other and if you hear a player say the opposite, he blatantly lies.
From my experience I have something positive, I have known the emotions of poker in the different phases as a player and analyzing them I have learned from them and that has allowed me to know myself and others better. Because of that I want to talk to you, pokero friends, about the emotions and how it affects that in your daily life, with your family, your friends, your partner, ultimately with your nearest environment.
I do not want to continue with this article without mentioning the person who in my opinion knows more about emotions as a player and as a person than anyone else in the world, the great Paco Pineda , a great friend who despite the disagreements and setbacks of life always Has a word, a smile, or a friendly gesture for everyone. (Thanks Paco for being my friend). I know that Paco has given some lecture on this subject and sure that in many respects he will give me the reason.
There are stages in the single player stage (so I see it clear), and in each phase you acquire a level of learning, if you know what your level will allow you to minimize your losses or even make a profit if you choose the right tables. Leave your ego aside and recognize your status as a player, your life will be much more profitable.
Happiness and ignorance.
It is undoubtedly the most beautiful phase of a player; You do not understand probabilities, statistics, outs, percentages, etc .; You only know that your hand is winning if you leave your own (or so you think). You have money at that time to play poker and you face it with total confidence; You pay exorbitant bets to tripone stairs, color “rune rune”, third card of table and when they leave you do not like the comments of other players, you have won and period. You are not a regular player, you play when you can and it generally does not affect your environment or your daily life.
One good day, you start to wonder why a player has paid you a bet with second table pair when the Ace has come and bet hard; why there are days you win and most days you lose when others keep their earnings regularly. You begin to notice that more experienced players change the way they play when they face you, they become more aggressive and they throw good hands when you have a monster hand. How do you know? I did not bet hard, I seem to see the cards.
You begin to realize that there is more than your own letters and you search for answers in forums and articles online, ask the “friends” poker’s and after turning the subject you buy a basic strategy book with Mr. Negreanu on his cover . Sorry buddy, you’re intoxicated, the poison of poker is already in your veins.
In this phase you acquire level 1 , that is, to know what you carry , easy truth? Just look at your cards and you will know the potential of your hand.
In this level you will find 30% of the players.
