Poker Player-Mentality Versus Technique
Long-term emotional management is not only important but determines the success or failure of a professional poker player.
I would like to make an incision on this; although I consider the mentality as fundamental in poker when starting your professional career, is not by far the most important.
A good mentality will allow you to apply the best of yourself to the technical level, favor concentration, manage emotions and keep the tilt at bay, keep motivation, have a high and stable self esteem, trust your game in the bad races and a long etc.
But in spite of this, when we begin the change from recreational to professional, the priority is to rush to acquire and establish a good technical base of knowledge about the game and about the tools of support.
At low levels, emotional management is far less important than theoretical knowledge about the game; The differences of knowledge and their application determine the greatest advantage over our rivals.
On the other hand, when we reach high levels it is the emotional management that will make the difference, since the technical gaps are much smaller; Except for some exceptions or against a fish.
Where do I begin?
The initial idea is to create a plan to start improving in the technical section.
Get articles, videos, join schools, etc. On the Internet you will find a wide range of free stuff, so be sure to exhaust it before you start with the payment material, unless you are clear where you are getting into.
As you improve and climb in the world of poker will be a good time to start improving your mentality and cover your mental errors regarding the activity.
And up here would be everything, were it is not for three small details:
The more time passes, the more expensive they are.
The more you repeat something, the more time and dedication you will have to change it in the future.
Changes at the mental level require at least 3 to 6 months of time to settle.
So in my humble opinion it occurs to me to apply the “Better safe than sorry”.
What do you think if we start to value a few aspects that allow us to at least not create big problems in the future? In this way we create a much healthier and more appropriate start to our activity.
We seek to apply small concepts that facilitate emotional management in the future and that facilitate the path that is to come.
Your day to day determines your future.
In poker … it’s more in life !, talent is one thing and attitude is different.
Although talent opens the way and facilitates us, it is the attitude that is responsible for running it.
So good news, for everyone! In poker and in life the attitude acts as a multiplier of our abilities plus our knowledge.
Develop an attitude that favors achieving your goals. Yes, you read it right; The attitude is a skill and therefore can be developed and practiced. On the basis of establishing routines made up of empowering habits you will achieve it.
Remember: if you rely exclusively on your talent, it may take you to places where your attitude will not be able to sustain you.
Remember that what you do day by day is the only thing that matters when it comes to achieving goals. According to your actions, so will your results.
You are your only and most dangerous enemy.
Remember that in poker and in life, you are the only real enemy you will encounter.
Depending on your attitude to the obstacles you will find in poker, you will have a happy and enjoyable journey or an authentic roller coaster through the 9 hells.
